Stability AI, the company behind the popular image-generating model Stable Diffusion, has announced the launch of a new service called Stable Doodle. This service utilizes the latest Stable Diffusion model to transform sketches into visually appealing images. It is now available through ClipDrop, a platform that Stability acquired earlier this year.
According to Stability AI, Stable Doodle is designed for both professionals and beginners in the field of art and design. The service allows anyone with basic drawing skills and internet access to create high-quality original images within seconds.
While there are already several sketch-to-image AI tools available, Stability AI claims that Stable Doodle stands out due to its precise control over image generation. Underlying this capability is the Stable Diffusion XL model, combined with a conditional control solution called T2I-Adapter developed by Tencent’s Applied Research Center (ARC). This control solution enables Stable Doodle to understand sketch outlines and generate images based on prompts combined with those outlines.
Stability AI shared some cherry-picked images created using Stable Doodle prior to its release, which appeared impressive compared to the original doodles that inspired them. To guide the image generation process, users can provide a prompt such as “A comfy chair in ‘isometric’ style” or “Cat with a jeans jacket in ‘digital art’ style.” However, it’s worth noting that at launch, Stable Doodle only supports 14 styles of art.
The company envisions Stable Doodle as a valuable tool for designers and illustrators to save time and increase efficiency in their work. It suggests that ideas sketched on paper can be quickly transformed into designs for clients, materials for presentations or websites, and even logos. Stability AI plans to expand the capabilities of Stable Doodle by allowing users to import sketches and exploring specific use cases for various industries like real estate applications.
Stable Doodle represents an opportunity for Stability AI to generate revenue after facing some financial challenges. While the service is currently free, there are certain limitations imposed on its usage. In April, it was reported that Stability AI was experiencing a cash burn, prompting the company to seek new executives to bolster its sales efforts. Last month, Stability AI raised $25 million through a convertible note, bringing its total funding to over $125 million. However, the company has not secured new funding at a higher valuation since its last valuation of $1 billion.
